One of the major problems with the 1859 cable centered around King Island - especially around the Sea Elephant Rocks area. Some insight into the problem is revealed by correspondence from Samuel McGowan published in the 1861-62 Report of the General Superintendent of Electric Telegraph ... for the Year ending 31st December 1861.
It is informative to read these details against the description of laying the cable - especially 27 to 31 July 1859.
